Same Roots, New Branches: Key Takeaways from CIID’s Recent Webinar

Author: Taylor Hernandez

We recently hosted a webinar introducing our updated scope and approach to supporting state education agencies (SEAs) and lead agencies in managing IDEA data. During the webinar, we shared insights about data integration, technical assistance, and our expanding work into Part C, emphasizing practical strategies to improve data quality, reduce burden, and foster sustainability. Here are the five key takeaways from the session:

1. We Have the same Roots but Are Growing New Branches

We are building on a decade of experience supporting high-quality IDEA Part B data integration and continue to ensure accurate, timely, and usable data. What’s new is an expansion into Part C, creating opportunities to integrate data systems for infants and toddlers with disabilities, and leveraging existing groundwork while introducing new Part C focused tools and practices.

2. Data Integration Reduces Burden and Improves Quality

A central focus of CIID’s work is helping states integrate fragmented data systems. Proper integration ensures that definitions, business rules, and validation processes are applied consistently, reducing duplication and errors. The result is higher-quality data and more time for meaningful analysis and decision-making, rather than manual reconciliation.

3. We Offer Multi-Level, State-Centered Technical Assistance

  • CIID offers differentiated levels of support tailored to each state’s needs so that our work is flexible and sustainable:
  • Universal TA: Our website, self-directed resources, webinars, and newsletters.
  • Targeted TA: Structured group support, including Data Bridge Summits, Office Hours, Cohort Based Workshops, and the Generate Governance Group (G3).
  • Intensive TA: Customized, multi-year support for states modernizing IDEA reporting and implementing cross-agency data governance.

4. Generate is a Practical Tool for Data Management

The Generate application and its associated documentation simplify the process of submitting files to EDPass. Features like real-time validation, drill-down transparency, file comparison utilities, and open-source documentation empower states to manage, analyze, and report their data efficiently. Generate also supports the creation of reproducible processes that adapt to evolving reporting requirements.

5. Collaboration and Peer Learning Are Key

CIID emphasizes shared understanding and partnership across agencies. Whether through peer learning, stakeholder gatherings, or targeted workshops, the goal is to build sustainable data practices. In addition, CIID is focusing on Part C tools and services, knowledge development, and creating standardized processes that strengthen collaboration and reduce duplication across the technical assistance network.
